Established in 1972, the Marine Education Center and Aquarium serves over 45,000 people annually through student field trips, teacher workshops, summer marine science camps, academic internships and public programs. The center offers over 40 field explorations and laboratory studies, including field trips to Wassaw Island, squid dissections, and estuary trawls.

The UGA Aquarium houses a variety of coastal fish, invertebrates, and reptiles, most of which are native to the Georgia coast. Exhibit tanks feature loggerhead sea turtles, stingrays, and diamondback terrapins. Touch tanks allow visitors hands-on interactions with whelks, horseshoe crabs, and more. At the center you’ll also find nature trails, observation platforms, and shaded picnic areas along the banks of the Skidaway River.

Our marine educators offer public programs that provide opportunities for the community to discover marine organisms and explore coastal habitats. Participants can see native reptiles up close, partake in a guided hike through the maritime forest, and learn to identify plankton in field and lab settings. Check out our event calendar for a list of upcoming SEA programs: http://marex.uga.edu/calendar/

The Marine Education Center and Aquarium provides citizens of all ages with information and experiences that will help them make informed decisions about the future of Georgia’s beautiful coast.
