Medicine Show is New York City's oldest continuously performing experimental theatre company. Founded in 1970 by original members of the Open Theater, we have presented more than 240 productions, 46 of them world and US premieres. We do original collaboratively created works, rarely performed classics, new American plays, new translations of great European plays, "lost" American musicals from the 20s and 30s, collage plays and performance art, staged readings of new American works, and an annual writers' reading series which presents both emerging writers and Pulitzer Prize winners. Almost everything we do is comedy, since we believe that is the best way to approach really serious matters. (As David Garrick is reputed to have said on his deathbed, "Dying is easy; comedy is hard.") We also remain true to the idea of a "poor theatre," that is one which does big challenging plays, full of color and brightly costumed and produced, but with a minimum of expensive technical gewgaws - our emphasis is on the acting and not on the special effects. Medicine Show is located at 549 West 52nd Street in Manhattan, near 11th Avenue.
