Pittsburgh Festival Opera

Pittsburgh Festival Opera presents innovative opera, producing American works, reinterpretations of older works, and new works, for the widest possible audience. The company focuses on diversity in programming and casting, on crossing boundaries and bringing together talents from all the arts, on encouraging new talent, and on broadening audiences through outreach and education, to create a body of work that is original, entertaining, contemporary, and relevant.

Pittsburgh Festival Opera brings the power of world-class performances to humanize, energize and re-define opera as an experience that is up-close and personal, approachable, and relevant to today’s audiences. We break boundaries in the arts, bringing together audiences and artists of all backgrounds to engage in experiences that inspire and enthrall.

Pittsburgh Festival Opera celebrates the telling of stories through music. Whether that be in the form of grand opera of European heritage, musical theater from America's commercial theater, or arias and songs from across genres, we present innovative programs in a variety of venues.

Our primary performance series occurs during our summer season, in June and July each year. But Pittsburgh Festival Opera is more than just that, with an annual international voice competition, a fundraising gala, and a lot of parties and special events.

Join us in June and July 2018 for our 41st season of presenting great operas in English, in new productions that immerse you in glorious music. Experience intimate opera theater in the comfortable environs of the Falk Auditorium and Hilda Willis Room at Winchester Thurston School in Shadyside.

The 2018 Summer Season will include:

Mainstage Productions:
RHINEGOLD by Richard Wagner
Witness the dawn of a universe and share in a journey that millions have taken, as Pittsburgh Festival Opera marches you into Valhalla for its acclaimed Pittsburgh Ring Cycle. Before Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones there was the Ring, an epic legend of Norse mythology set to music—a crowning achievement of Western civilization.

ARABELLA by Richard Strauss
Continuing our cycle of lesser-known masterpieces by Strauss, we present this Viennese comedy of secret desires, mistaken identities, and ludicrous disputes. Bankruptcy forces an aging count to marry off his daughter to a wealthy suitor—but she has her own plans.

LA BOHÈME WARHOLA by Giacomo Puccini
Experience Puccini's most famous opera reimagined in 1960's New York in this new production. Pop art, Polaroids, and paintbrushes prevail in this timeless tale of love and loss.
