Steeped in fascinating stories of the Prince Bishop’s and with a history dating back over 900 years, Auckland Castle stands high above the meandering River Wear, in the Vale of Durham.
Discover stories of the Prince Bishops in our beautiful state rooms, explore Europe’s largest private chapel and take some time to view Jacob and his Twelve Sons painted by Spanish Master Francisco de Zurbarán, which hang in the beautiful Long Dining Room, and are one of Europe’s greatest treasures of religious art. Explore our changing programme of exhibitions which currently includes: Pitmen and Prelates, Fri 27 May – Fri 30 September 2016 and Janet Cardiff’s, Forty Part Motet Fri 27 May – Sun 11 September 2016.
Move outdoors to take a stroll around the gardens or a ramble within the 200 acre Deer Park to discover a charming 18th-century Deer House. But before you leave don’t forget to drop into the Library Tea Room for a light lunch, a slice of cake or an indulgent afternoon tea.
This summer is your last chance to see the home of the Prince Bishops of Durham as it currently stands, before it closes to daily visits on 30 September 2016 for major restoration work. When it reopens in 2018, it will have been restored and redeveloped to create a visitor attraction of the highest quality and experience.
Monday to Sunday 10am -5pm. Last admission 4pm. Closed Tuesday.
