Raby is without doubt one of the most impressive intact castles in England. Situated in the Durham Dales, it was built in the 14th century by the powerful Nevill family. Throughout its long history, it was the home of Cicely Nevill, Rose of Raby, mother of Kings Edward IV and Richard III, scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North, a Parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War, and most recently a film location for ITV’s Victoria. Since 1626 to the present day it has been the seat of the Vane family, who welcome visitors to the castle each year to view the sumptuous interiors and fabulous art collection. Treasures include an important collection of Meissen porcelain, tapestries, furniture, furnishings and paintings. The Castle’s knowledgeable and friendly guides help bring history to life with guided tours on weekdays, or explore the castle at your own pace on weekends and during School holidays.

As well as the picturesque walled gardens, carriage collection and 200 acres of parkland with deer and Longhorn cattle, there’s also a tearoom, gift shop, play area and a programme of special events for all to enjoy.
