The South Devon Railway is one of Devon’s and the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the south west.
The South Devon Railway is a seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart, offering beautiful views between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. We run steam trains with heritage rolling stock and offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. At Buckfastleigh, the main station, there is a riverside walk and picnic area, play area, gardens, museum, an absorbing engineering workshop and a well stocked shop and refreshment rooms where a great variety of freshly made food is served. Totnes is a short walk from the town and main line station. Your train ticket also gives reduced entry to Totnes castle. Alternatively, leave the train at Staverton, the half way point, and enjoy one of a number of rural and riverside walks.
The journey between Buckfastleigh and Totnes takes about 30 minutes in each direction.
