The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the south west. It’s well worth a visit. The former Great Western Railway branch line runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart, rich in wildlife, between Buckfastleigh and Totnes (Riverside). It is a 14-mile round trip and the steam trains will take you back in time as you enjoy a wonderful all weather attraction for visitors of all ages.
As well as the wonderful scenery, there is loads to see and do. At Buckfastleigh, the main station, there are beautiful gardens, a riverside picnic area, museum, the engineering workshop, where steam locomotives are restored and rebuilt, plus the Refreshment Rooms, plus a great gift and model railway shop. On selected days, the miniature railway and garden railway are also operating. At Staverton, there are a number of riverside walks and the station staff there can provide you with details. Totnes (Riverside) is a 500 yard walk from the main line station from where there are buses and footpaths to the centre of this mediaeval town.
Adjacent to the station at Buckfastleigh is Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies, and the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm is next to Totnes (Riverside) station. Great value ‘3 Great Attractions, 1 Amazing Day’ joint tickets are available for a train ride and a visit to either or both of the attractions – it’s worth leaving plenty of time as you will be able to enjoy up to a whole day of fun and entertainment!
Buckfastleigh station, which is just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth, has plenty of free car parking. The SDR station at Totnes (Riverside) is a short walk from Totnes town and the main line station. There are car parks in the town and, if you are travelling to the railway by train, the main line station is served by GWR and Cross Country train services.
