Hill House Nursery

Situated in the rural South Hams of Devon, this family run nursery raises the majority of plants on the premises. Our stock ranges from the well-known and loved to the rare and unusual, both for the garden & conservatory and we're proud to say that our prices are reasonable and our plants of high quality. Several new plant introductions have been bred or cultured here but the most successful and best-known is Nemesia fruticans 'Bluebird' which has sold over 13 million plants, propagated under licence, all over the world. Others are Plectranthus 'Sasha', Plectranthus 'Hill House', Dianthus 'Old Mother Hubbard' and Crocosmia 'Krakatoa'.

The garden, which is open free of charge, is the setting for a Gothic Victorian former vicarage designed in the 1850s by John Loughborough Pearson, architect of Truro Cathedral and Brisbane Cathedral. In the churchyard next to us is a grave of the Baskerville family, relatives of the coachman whose name Conan Doyle 'stole' for his eponymous novel. The garden as it is now, was originally laid out by Edward Hyams, a famous plantsman and garden writer of his time and a former owner of the house when it ceased to be a vicarage. When the Hubbard family moved here in 1981, Raymond Hubbard undertook the complete restoration of the by then rather neglected garden. It still contains many of Hyams's original Camellias and a Magnolia delavayi given to him by Agatha Christie, who was a friend of his. The nursery is open all year round except for two weeks when we close on the Friday before Christmas Eve. From 1st March to 30th September the Tea Room (which is the old village meeting room) serves home made cakes, scones & soups and freshly made sandwiches and salads, using local produce as much as possible. In fine weather there is outdoor seating on the Tea Room lawn and the terrace in front of the house. In addition, we are stockists of Classics at Hill House Nursery, a company that is not owned by us but which sources old and antique gardening artefacts and makes them available for sale on these premises. Many come from France and there are lovely old stone troughs, copper or brass basins, stone statues, wrought iron garden furniture and a whole large range of things to enhance your garden or conservatory.

We're approximately 4 miles from Totnes and 2.5 from Ashburton. Coach parties are welcome but we do require notice for those.

Our web site is also an online shop and we can arrange 48 hour courier delivery to anywhere within UK, or if you prefer you can ring 01803 762273 to order by phone and pay by card.

Dear Sasha,
Our Members enjoyed the visit. Excellent snacks PM. Some would have liked a cooked lunch but we were late in the day. The range of plants was incredible.
Kind Regards
Malcolm
