Elsham Hall Gardens and Country Park

Elsham Hall dates back to the 1760s and was acquired by the Elwes Family in 1931 from King's College Cambridge having previously belonged to the Astley Corbett family. In 1939 the Hall was requisitioned as an Anti-Aircraft H.Q. during the Second World War but was left badly damaged necessitating the demolition of two of the wings. The present house along with a 19th Century orangery in the grounds is Grade II* listed and a private family home. (The Hall is not open to the public).

The Park and Gardens were opened as a Country Park in 1970 by Captain and Mrs Elwes "to promote enjoyment of the countryside and wildlife and an appreciation of the arts and rural crafts". The gardens include a large medieval carp lake and stew pond and a 19th century coach house and stables which are also Grade II listed.

Walled Garden

The Walled Garden is a magnificent 4 acre site which has been excitingly re-landscaped. Originally a private garden for cultivating flowers, fruit and vegetables for the 'big' house it is now a contemporary garden to be enjoyed by all.

There are drifts of bulbs in the spring and wild flowers in the summer. There is a sensory garden and a 'one world' area, paddocks for friendly sheep and goats, a guinea pig village, aviaries and a variety of sculptures.

The very large grass viewing mound is perfect for rolypolying down!

Talk with the Animals

Elsham Hall, Gardens and Country Park has a selection of small domestic and farm animals which live in the park and garden areas. Our rabbits have a new home in the Secret Garden where you will also find some colourful pheasants.

The lakes are home to a variety of ducks, geese and occasionally visiting swans. The giant carp can be fed from the feeding jetty which is very popular.

From the bird hide many native british birds can be spotted including tree creepers, nuthatches and long tailed tits.

The sheep at Elsham start lambing in March in the lambing sheds (look out for our special lambing days). The older lambs can be seen skipping about in the fields on the main entrance drive.

School Visits

School visits are welcome to Elsham Hall Gardens and Country Park throughout the year at any time, provided they have been pre booked. Teachers are also welcome to come on a free preliminary visit to see exactly where your pupils will be coming and to check out the facilities on offer.
