Rutland, the smallest county in England, has loads of character, natural beauty & truly warrants its motto: “So Much in So Little – Multum in Parvo”. Most visitors comment on the friendly welcome they find everywhere.

Countryside at its best! Beautiful Rutland Water then provides a wonderful opportunity for water sports, cycling, walking, climbing [at Rockbloc], trout fishing, cruising on the Rutland Belle and for visiting the amazing nature reserves & bird watching centre. The reserves are recently extended & home to both the Osprey Project [the first osprey chick to hatch in England for 150 years] & the British Bird Watching Fair each August. Geoff Hamilton’s Barnsdale Gardens & the Owl & Falconry Centre are just a few minutes drive away. For those interested in heritage we are central for Rockingham, Belvoir & Grimsthorpe Castles & Belton & Burghley Houses: besides Oakham Castle, Rutland Museum & many other interesting places.

Visiting Oakham, the county town is a must. Try the Heritage Trail & see the history and character; browse the many good quality, independent, small shops or stop off at a tea shop, pub or restaurant. If you know Lands End clothes you will want to check bargains [25 – 60% off] at their retail outlet. Melton Mowbray, also a market town, in the other direction is very different in character and famous for Stilton cheese, pork pies and its markets. Uppingham and Stamford are other absolute musts to see. Being central to the cities of Nottingham, Leicester & Peterborough means that they are all easy to visit, within a ¾ hour drive, & Lincoln just a little further. The National Space Centre is less than 40 minutes from Greendale.

Then of course there is the Oakham Festival [June], Whissendine Feast Week [early July], Stamford Shakespeare Festival, Railway Museum, Steam Fairs, Rutland Day & Food Fair [Sept.], art exhibitions, open gardens, stone villages, markets, real ale... How long can you stay?
