Stunning Georgian home of Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin and leading 18th century doctor, scientist, botanist, inventor and poet. One of the foremost physicians of his time, able to decline a request from King George III to be his personal doctor, as he preferred life in Lichfield. Founder member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham – the main intellectual powerhouse of England’s Industrial Revolution – with such luminaries as Matthew Boulton and Josiah Wedgwood. He was also the most popular poet of the 1790s.
His theories of biological evolution, by means of natural selection, were handed down from father to son, and finally proven by his grandson Charles.
There’s something for everyone in his restored Grade I listed home and museum – period furnishings, interactive displays, video and fun children’s activities. The stunning herb garden – inspired by Darwin’s 18th century botanic garden - is a treat for the senses.
