Learn to Surf Newcastle

Established in 2004 as Redhead Mobile Surf School offering the smallest group sessions in town, Owner Miles Niddrie changed the surf school’s name to Learn to Surf Newcastle in 2012 to better reflect the school’s Newcastle-wide area of operation. Licensed with Surfing Australia, which oversees over 80 affiliated surf schools Australia wide and local council approved. We're open all year round including winter. Our surf school was the 1st in Newcastle to offer smaller class sizes and lower coach to surfer ratios in 2004. The school has always been a mobile operation to provide quality surf instruction at the most suitable beaches around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Primary locations are Blacksmiths, Caves and Stockton beaches and we have licences for beaches from Stockton to Catherine Hill Bay with loads of options to choose from.

As no beach in Newcastle is “safe” all the time we may need to travel to find the right beginner wave for your lessons. It is not as simple as just going to any beach and paddling out. Every surfer will tell you its all about the tides, the swell direction, the sandbanks and the wind, just like fishing you need a plan.
Miles grew up in Aviemore, Scotland with ice hockey and snow skiing his favourite sports, arriving in Newcastle in 1977 his passion for surfing began and has never stopped. There were no surf schools back then and surfing was a self-taught sport. Luckily we now have surfing instruction available for everyone to get proper education on water safety and surfing safety. Surfing looks easy but is not easy to do. Miles has coached for over 14 years and developed his programs for all ages and fitness levels. Advanced coaching as well and just like a golf swing your surfing can always improve with some technique adjustments!
I also offer birthday parties, Team building groups and Hens/Bucks shows.
Every beach works differently and 1 beach can be dangerous and unsafe but a short drive away another beach can be perfect on the SAME day! All lessons include vital surf safety education and information on wave types, rips and currents, sandbanks, tides and much more.
Bookings are essential.
Surfing takes a while to master and you will always be learning new things from your surfs, but you may need some help. Just working out when and where to go surfing takes experience. Travelling to find the right waves is part of the fun of surfing and if you learn from an experienced coach you will know where to go and at the best time. Our local beaches have lots of differences and I will teach you how they work and why. Remember to find suitable waves for your level of surfing involves tide, wind, swell size and sandbanks. Every beach works differently and 1 beach can be dangerous and unsafe but a short drive away another beach can be perfect on the SAME day!
Cost from $35pp under 18 $40pp over 18 all equipment supplied just bring swimwear and a towel.

My 10 year old twin boys had a great time learning to surf with Miles and his team. A lot of attention to beach safety, how to spot a rip and of course the most exciting part learning to surf. Both boys learnt to stand up. Mile’s and his team are enthusiastic, informed and passionate about teaching kids about the sea. If they see a child struggling they are there to give them support. Our family highly recommend www.learntosurfnewcastle.com Really great way to introduce kids to surfing in the safest of environments guided by Miles and his excellent team.
