A Tiki inspired escape
Whilst setting up here in the beautiful surrounds of Avoca Beach lots of visitors have asked "what is Tiki" ?
Tiki is simple, if you want to look historically and geographically, Tiki is defined by Polynesian culture - specifically, Tiki was the first man on Earth. Tiki also refers to carved totem pole-like statuses such as the huge stone heads discovered on Easter Island. These connections however are loosely interpreted, Tiki for us is more American kitsch than a Polynesian fine art form.
Tiki culture was started by an American restaurateur Donn Beach, in the 1930s when he opened "Don the Beachcomber bar". He created cocktails based on rum and decorated his bar like the rum shacks he’d come across in Jamaica. He was closely followed by another restaurateur, Trader Vic. Like Donn Beach, he based his cocktails substantially on rum. He decorated the interior with fishing nets, stuffed fish and carved Tiki poles -Tiki culture was born !
So the version of Tiki Culture that we love is the genre inspired by the glamour of 1930s to 1950s Americana, garnished with Hawaiian and Polynesian pop styles. Blending these cultures with specific types of drinks, food and the distinguishing décor of dark woods, thatch, rattan and bamboo. Tropical plants, waterfalls, hand-carved Tiki gods and Moai, along with nautical accents make up an atmosphere of true Tiki.
Food is an Americanised combination of South Pacific and Asian cuisine designed to share, drinks are mostly rum-based, complex, traditionally punchy rather than sweet.
For us here at Mojito Joes, it’s all about living the good life the way the cocktail set did back in the day; having fun, listening to summer sounds of the past or jazz influenced island music with a jungle twist, all to the background of the waves crashing on Avoca beach.
A place to be with friends, sipping a tropical cocktail, sharing some food and taking it nice and easy. Tiki Culture was about escapism, here we wanted to create a special place where you can escape from the fast-paced lives we live, even if its just for the time it takes to enjoy a Mojito and some Chilli Lime Fries..... or for those who like to linger longer.
Cheers, enjoy,
