Uprising Boulder Gym is Christchurch’s premier bouldering facility, a gym which challenges your mind as well as your muscles. We opened in June 2015, with an ultramodern bouldering wall which allows our creative routesetters to design challenges unparalleled in diversity and excitement.

Bouldering is an exciting, accessible form of climbing becoming more and more popular around the world. Boulderers leave the traditional rope and harness behind for the freedom of unhindered movement – all that is needed is a pair of closed shoes, a dusting of hand chalk and a soft mat below you. We are lucky enough to live a short drive from one of the top bouldering areas in the world, Castle Hill basin. When you can’t make it to the stunning limestone boulders in this gigantic playground, the Uprising Boulder Gym is here for you!

Bouldering is all about the movement, and each “boulder problem” is a challenge which requires thought, balance, technique and determination to solve. Strength helps too, but reliance on brute force will not get you far!

This is a type of exercise for those who love to solve problems, to challenge their own assumptions about what they can achieve and surprise themselves.

We want our wall to fundamentally change the way you think about indoor climbing. In addition, our downstairs training area has weights, hangboards and cross-training equipment making it much more than just a climbing wall – a revolutionary fitness centre.

We want this gym to be the heart of climbing in Christchurch, and our location on Tanner Street, on the block of The Tannery retail and hospitality sector, sets us in one of the most vibrant parts of the city. We have agonised over every angle of wall and detail, and we are unbelievably excited about it.

This is your gym, your wall. We want this to be the place you have fun, meet friends, get strong.

Uprising Boulder Gym is also the home of the world-renowned Uprising Climbing Holds, and you can find prototypes and test shapes here that exist nowhere else in the world!
