In recent years, Strait Street in Valletta enjoyed a breath of life. Trendy clubs and restaurants have sprouted in the stead of the empty shells that had previously provided entertainment during the time of the second world war. Regaling them with its persona is Palazzo Preca, a restaurant housed inside a 16th century palazzo, the history of which very little is known. The interior is classy and charming; the lighting subdued but complemented by numerous candles on every table. The kitchen is driven by the tireless energy of Ramona Preca, while her husband Jan expertly manages the front of house.
Palazzo Preca offers a broad range of Mediterranean food. The seasonal menu is predominantly fish-based, with shellfish imported live from Scotland and delivered by express mail to ensure maximum freshness. Jan is always pleased to arrange degustation menus catering for his patrons’ tastes and whims. The feast may include scallops, fried calamari, octopus, prawns, mussels, polpette di neonati, and other succulent seafood treasures. Meat lovers are also well catered-for with the specials board offering mouth-watering cuts, while the desserts include playful and imaginative offerings such as the pumpkin cake with chocolate chips and ice cream. The wine list is equally extensive and enticing, and is regularly revised. It also features a pleasant surprise — a house wine produced locally, using grapes from a private vineyard, specifically for Palazzo Preca.
