Along an alternative, little-known route into the city of Valletta, and tucked away within its outer fortification walls, is the unique gallery dedicated to one of Britain’s foremost abstract art pioneers. Born in Chelsham, Surrey, Victor Pasmore (1908-1998) is arguably the most important artist to have settled and worked in Malta in the second half of the twentieth century. The gallery, once a gunpowder magazine, now houses a permanent collection of a wide range of Pasmore’s creations and preferred media, including drawings, reliefs, spray paintings, constructions and composite works. Though not all produced in Malta, the works on display are largely representative of Pasmore’s artistic practice and philosophy, following his move to the island in 1966.

The Victor Pasmore Gallery was officially opened to the public on the 3rd of November 2014 following a collaborative agreement between The Victor Pasmore Foundation and The Central Bank of Malta. In September 2015, Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti took over the management of the Victor Pasmore Gallery with the intention of bringing to light the importance of Pasmore against the backdrop of the Maltese modern art movement.
