The Fanad peninsula with its rugged Atlantic coastline, secluded beaches, unspoiled landscape and vibrant local culture is one of Donegal’s great secrets. At the tip of the peninsula, Fanad Head is the location for one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world and in 2016, it opened to the public to visit and to stay in, for the first time in its 199 year history!
Still a working lighthouse, the light is now fully automated, the light-keepers have left and their homes have been renovated to provide luxury accommodation for anyone wishing to break away for a time. The three self-catering cottages boast no wi-fi and a very unreliable phone signal! Otherwise every modern comfort is supplied to ensure you have the ultimate getaway.
Perched on the edge of the ocean, you are ideally placed to watch sunset and sunrise. You will be spellbound by the stars in the night sky and you might see the Aurora Borealis.
We also offer guided tours of Fanad lighthouse. Visitors can learn about the light and aids to navigation past and present, hear stories about light-keepers in days gone by and climb to the top of the tower for spectacular views of land and sea.
Visitors can explore a largely undiscovered area of Donegal. We are situated in close proximity to 2 top ranking golf links courses, Portsalon and Rossapenna, and world class surfing, hill-walking and other attractions are all close by.
