The Rachel Carson Homestead is the birthplace and early home of author and environmentalist, Rachel Carson. Maria and Robert Carson purchased the house and 64 acres in 1901. Rachel was born here in 1907 and lived here through her college years. The Carsons sold the house around 1932.
The house is about 18 miles from Pittsburgh. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, and is a Pittsburgh Historic Landmark. The house is open for tours on Saturdays from April 22 through November, from 10:30 - 1:30 and for special events. Visitors may also request tours by appointment.
The original four-room house was constructed around 1860 and had no indoor plumbing until the 1930s when an owner after the Carsons renovated the house. An addition was built and upgrades in the original rooms included heat, water, and electricity. The grounds include the original springhouse where the Carsons obtained water. The Homestead includes a small walking trail, and modest gardens.
A nonprofit organization, the Rachel Carson Homestead Association, founded in 1975, operates the site.
