While growing up on a 265 acre dairy farm in the northern part of the county, and another dairy farm just a short distance apart, my wife and I both learned valuable lessons from our parents, "the only thing that would lead to success was hard work." My wife's family bought a bar-restaurant in 1969 and with a lot of blood sweat and tears, built a successful business. I was fortunate enough to be hired to work as a busboy at the restaurant in 1976, eventually courted the boss's daughter, caught her at a weak moment and convinced her to marry me in 1983. Twenty four years and two children later, my wife and I stepped out on our own and purchased the former Maple City Restaurant, a historic landmark since 1947. Over thirty years of experience told us both that it wouldn't be easy, but we followed our hearts and thoroughly enjoy the success of this little piece of history in the middle of town.
Coming from a fine dining establishment primarily serving full course dinners, we have had to make a few adjustments with menu selections and the time of day we start, its just like being back on the farm... long days, homestyle cooked meals, and big breakfasts. I am blessed with the hardest working wife anyone could ask for and a staff who put their heart and soul into their work also. The warm welcome and outpouring of support from family, friends, and local businesses have been a big boost for us and has given us a great start for what we hope will be a long lasting relationship with "our town."
Since Honesdale was the birthplace of the American railroad, and the identity has been nearly "lost in the shuffle," we chose to name the place Trackside Grill and "kick up" the atmosphere so that we never forget where we came from! Employees decked out in engineer caps and red bandanas serve fresh ground coffee, big pancakes, Clarks Fresh Sausage, Orange Blossom Special Shakes, our signature sandwich (The Choo Choo), Homemade soups and daily specials, all while echoing the occasional train whistle toot from customers who carry their own train whistle.
