Esk Valley Railway Development Company

The Esk Valley Railway Development Company is a not-for-profit Community Rail Partnership which promotes the Middlesbrough to Whitby rural railway to both residents and visitors as a sustainable, affordable means of experiencing and exploring the North York Moors National Park and coast by public transport.
Opened in its entirety 150 years ago, this superb scenic route takes you through picturesque rural stations following the course of the River Esk to the sea and the heritage town of Whitby, recently voted one of the top five UK tourism destinations. The train brings you right into the heart of Whitby. From here, you can access local buses and continue your journey through town to some of the other beautiful coastal villages such as Sandsend and Staithes.
Virtually all 36 miles of the rail journey from the outskirts of Middlesbrough is idyllic and one of the best kept secrets of the UK rail network. Travel to one of the rural villages served by our railway and enjoy a traditional pub lunch by the river.
Our website http://eskvalleyrailway.co.uk features information on each station, listing facilities available, including examples of waking routes. Dogs and bikes go free (2 bikes subject to space being available). Scroll down the page of each to access fares and timetables to and from a station. Sunday services will run year-round from 2nd April 2017 and an early morning commuter train into Middlesbrough is due by the end of 2019. There are also late trains on Fridays through the summer so you can enjoy an evening in Whitby and watch the sun set before heading back to Stations along the line to Middlesbrough.
The Esk Valley Railway connects to the rest of the national rail network at Middlesbrough for onward journeys to York, Manchester, Edinburgh or London. Information such as journey planning, group bookings and onward connections can also be found on the train operator's website: http://www.northerrailway.co.uk. or contact http://www.nationalrail.co.uk.
Ramps are available. Wheelchairs welcome. Pushchairs need to be folded, particularly on busy services. For a timetable, either download one from our website or contact EVRDC for one by post if preferred. Please note that we will respond to enquiries as soon as possible. You can folllow us on twitter @EVRDC.
