Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum

A Legacy forged from Blood, Sweat and Ironstone.

Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum preserves the legacy of the region's long lost ironstone industry. The Tees Valley was the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution and the British Empire. Her 83 ironstone mines dispatched iron worldwide, forming the fabric of railways and bridges across Europe, America, Africa, India and Australia.

Visitors to the museum receive a 1.5 hour fully guided tour around the site of old Loftus Mine.

The museum seeks to preserve our heritage through the conservation and display of artefacts, photographs and documents. We also aim to support our local community by boosting local tourism and by providing specialist support to help people back into employment through the Iron Valley Task Force Programme. Our committed team of volunteers are an immense support to the museum and we provide opportunities to volunteers and people seeking work experience in Education, Guiding, Administration, Retail and Maintenance.
