Born out of a passion for steam trains, The Cathedrals Express is the brainchild of steam train enthusiast Marcus Robertson, whose mother, Elizabeth Beresford, wrote The Wombles.
His ambition to evoke the era of luxury steam travel was realised when the very first Cathedrals Express excursion left London in December 2000 bound for Canterbury. It was an instant success and the company quickly extended its programme to include a number of day trips starting from outside London to make steam travel more accessible. Once again passengers voted with their feet and these routes are now becoming increasingly popular, opening up the possibility of steam travel to a much wider audience.
Over a decade later, the company is proud to be offering day trips to more than 35 different destinations and picking up passengers at over 100 railway stations across the UK every year.
All day trip destinations are carefully selected for their cultural and historic appeal. They include some of the UK’s finest cathedral cities, most stunning coastal resorts as well as the country’s best shopping havens. Each journey is meticulously planned, not only to take in beautiful countryside but also to present the most challenging routes for the many different steam locomotives. These elements, combined with exceptional on-board menu, ensure that passengers can enjoy the very best of luxury steam travel.
