The Coffin Works is home to the award-winning Newman Brothers Museum, Birmingham's newest heritage site that can truly claim to be unique!
Newman Brothers made coffin fittings from 1894 when funeral fashions were at their peak, until 1999 when changing practices and standards saw a drop in trade. On that day, after 105 years of business, the workers carefully laid down their tools, switched off the lights and left the building, leaving everything still in place behind them.
Birmingham Conservation Trust took over the Grade II* Listed building and now run it as a museum and heritage attraction. Visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of the workplace as it would have been in 1965, the year of Winston Churchill's funeral. Take a step back in time on one of our guided tours to find out about the workers who staffed this thriving business, their stories and experiences, the social history that helped form Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter. Experience the working machinery, the hands-on activities for all ages and a range of special events and exhibitions throughout the year.
