The six acre Stackpole walled gardens, which were created in 1770, have been leased from the National Trust by Pembrokeshire Mencap Ltd (Registered Charity No. 1128982) since 1983 to provide work experience and horticultural training to local adults with learning disabilities. The garden at this time was derelict and initially the project comprised one member of staff and four participants who worked a 30’x30’ vegetable plot. Over the years the gardens have been bought back to life, not as a restoration but as a working garden. The participants, of whom there are now thirty, grow a range of fruit and vegetables and plants from seeds & plugs whilst undertaking Entry Level accredited qualifications in practical horticulture. They each have a micro allotment where they can choose what to grow and take that produce home thus promoting healthy living and creating a sense of wellbeing. They also work on our main vegetable garden and all of this produce and the plants they cultivate are for sale in the garden shop and used in Cawdors, our tea room.
Cawdors offers a range of light bites using local produce wherever possible. There is always a homemade soup and a daily special such as garden grown beetroot burgers. We use local cheeses in our paninis and the majority of our cakes are home made.
The gardens and tea room are open to the public free of charge and are an ideal stop off point if you are visiting Bosherston lily ponds and the Stackpole Estate.
