The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to more than 1,100 mammals, birds and reptiles from around the world, including several rare and endangered species. Get to know your neighbors on this planet at a natural oasis hidden away in one of the largest metropolitan areas on earth!
You’ll see lowland gorillas, seals, chimpanzees, Komodo dragons, exotic birds, tigers, giraffes, meerkats and more, all dwelling safely in captivity in impressive replicas of their natural habitats. But leave plenty of time to explore this vast urban oasis. It's no wonder that this attraction draws 1.5 million visitors a year!
Here’s a look at the exciting animals and plants that you can expect to see at the Los Angeles Zoo:
Birds: Dozens of colorful and noisy species abound at the Los Angeles Zoo, including snowy egrets, ostriches, parrots, Congo peafowls, king vultures, and many more! The World Birds Show highlights the fascinating behaviors of more than 20 types of birds, from macaws and cranes to condors and hawks.
Mammals: The zoo’s most famous residents are included in this list, which features American black bears, jaguars, African wild dogs, African lions, giant river otters, Sumatran tigers, harbor seals, kangaroos, koalas, wallaby, Asian elephants, hippopotamus, lemurs, seven kinds of monkeys, Speke's gazelle, Masai giraffes, desert bighorn sheep, mountain tapir, and dozens more.
Reptiles: The Los Angeles Zoo features many residents, including American alligators, emerald tree boa, Komodo dragons, Mexican beaded lizards, Aldabra tortoises, and more.
Invertebrates: Get an up-close view of Madagascar hissing cockroach, desert hairy scorpion, sunburst diving beetle, Goliath bird eating tarantula, and others.
Amphibians: These unique creatures can live both in fresh water and on land, and the Los Angeles Zoo is home to the axolotl, golden poison dart frog, and the Chinese giant salamander!
Botanical Gardens: Most people come to see the animals, but what many don’t realize is that there is a world full of equally impressive and unique plants and flowers waiting to be discovered. You’ll see plants such as the Chilean wine palm, bald cypress, cycads, cactus, and more. Some of these plants have been in existence since the age of dinosaurs, and you’ll have the rare chance to learn how they have adapted to survive.
The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens provides a great learning opportunity and a way to escape the urban noise for a morning or afternoon as you peruse the magnificent displays and habitats.
Your visit supports conservation! At the L.A. Zoo, our commitment to animas extends beyond those in our direct care. Fact is, we fund and participate in wildlife conservation programs all over the world. So just by purchasing a ticket, you're helping to protect endangered and vulnerable species. Thank you!
Parking: Free general parking. Preferred parking for an additional fee.
Hours: Daily 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Closed December 25th.
