Mill Dene is a very different garden. It is the private creation over 50 years of the current owners, Barry and Wendy Dare. They fell in love with it, even in its derelict state and set about making it beautiful, slowly over the years.

The garden stretches over 2 ½ acres and is either side of a tiny valley and surrounding the old Cotswold stone water mill. There are views and vistas everywhere. The garden has a variety of themes; the north facing garden with Cotswold brash soil, great in the Spring with bulbs, the bog garden alongside the brook, where the kingfisher lurks. The south facing aspect has a rose walk winding up to the Cricket lawn and at the top of the garden is a fruit garden and next to it, a herb garden. This is the Dares favourite spot.

How to define it? An English country garden? Yes, but with fun and surprises: There is the relaxed and tranquil mill pond and grotto, then there are the hidden signs suggesting you go to Stoke on Trent (in the nicest possible way!) and a Fruit Garden with wonderful views over the hills but with gooseberry bushes under which were found the family grandchildren!! The herb potager has plants with medicinal, culinary and pot pourri uses but also aphrodisiacs!
