How Hill Windmill. Self Catering weekly lets only. Saturday to Saturday from spring to autumn.The Windmill stands in my garden. It was built in 1824 as a working grain mill, but is now fully fitted out as a modern dwelling that will sleep up to four people. It is situated in a quiet, picturesque, rural location adjoining the National Nature Reserve. There is a path down the hill to the River Ant where the old sailing wherries used to moor to bring their grain up to the windmill to be ground into flour. You are completely free, while staying in my mill, to make every use of these mooring facilities, (boat hire near-by.) The mill has its own private garden with suitable garden furniture, barbecue and a clothes line; children are welcome to play in any of the five acres (livestock permitting.)
The Accommodation. The ground floor of the mill is a large garage, with ample room for your car, bicycles, fishing tackle, etc. There is a washing machine in the garage for your use. The steps lead up to a large round first floor room which is a living area with a big south facing window overlooking the magnificent countryside; it is well worth bringing binoculars, sometimes a barn owl hunts across the paddock directly in front of the mill and you can also see the ancient ruins of St Benet's Abbey in the distance. There is a double bed that pushes half under the worktop to form a settee during the day and there are also two easy chairs. There is a dining table with chairs and the kitchen area has a modern electric cooker, small fridge and freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and iron etc. Above the living area there is the bathroom with W.C. and one separate single bedroom. Above that is another small bedroom with a 3ft single bed that has the ability of becoming two separate single beds or a 6ft double, but this fills the room. The hot water in both the kitchen and bathroom is heated electrically and there is electric central heating if necessary. The mill is well equipped and comfortable. I provide crockery, cutlery, pillows and blankets but prefer you to bring your own sheets, towels and tea cloths. (If however you are travelling by bicycle or train or coming from abroad, then bed linen and towels can be arranged.)
How Hill is a conservation area and a well known beauty spot. The Environmental Study Centre for the Broads is opposite. How Hill is famous for its wildlife, come to glimpse an otter or see swallowtail butterflies in the late spring, or hear the sound of the booming bittern and there are many beautiful plants to enjoy and some rare ones. There are walks through the National Nature Reserve, two bird hides and a small marshman's museum to visit. There is also an electric launch running trips through the dykes to see the wildlife, it goes where the usual motor craft are forbidden. The Windmill offers a unique holiday home in the heart of this beautiful unspoilt area of The Broads. It is an ideal place for anyone interested in bird watching,fishing, painting, walking, boating, or just relaxing in picturesque surroundings.
