The Friends of Cromford Canal (FCC) run a 70ft traditional narrow boat, Birdswood, along a beautiful stretch of the Cromford canal starting at Cromford Wharf. Take a leisurely two hour trip back in time and experience the sights of the picturesque Derwent Valley and the abundant wildlife along the canal . Also of historical interest is the Cromford and High Peak railway at High Peak Junction. This railway spanned the Pennines using horse drawn wagons and fixed winding engines to transport the wagons to the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge. You will also see the 1849 Leawood Pumping Station which is in steam on our horse days and can be visited free of charge. You may alight and take a short walk on the Wigwell aqueduct which carries the canal over the River Derwent and re-join the boat at the historic Wharf Shed which marks the end of the Cromford and High Peak railway. On your return trip experience life on the canals with a visit to our traditional boatman's cabin.

Trips run at 11:00 and 14:00 Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday between March and October with additional trips at the same times on Thursdays in June, July and August.

Trips on the first weekend of the month are horse drawn by Arraslea Shire's Chelsea, a Shire-Clydesdale Cross Breed.

Various family events throughout the year and Santa Specials run in December. Birdswood is available for private charter accommodating up to 40 passengers.

Aa excellent 2hr trip well spent!
Review by guest - Oct 17, 2016 - 9:27 AM
We arrived at Cromford Wharf not knowing there was a trip boat. There was no advertising on any of the approach roads. However this was a delightful trip along a really attractive stretch of the Derwent. We were made to feel welcome from the start by a friendly crew who's knowledge of the boat, canal and its history added to this charming trip. At the turning point for the return trip we were able to get off and explore the aqueduct, pump-house and the sad remains of a secluded cottage. Excellent value for money.
