Barley Cottage snuggles where the Dramatic Lake District National Park and the rolling Yorkshire Dales meet the Trough of Bowland, making it the ideal base for a touring/walking holiday. The village of Whittington, in the Lune Valley, is recorded in the Doomsday Book, The parish church records go back to 1538. It is peaceful and picturesque, surrounded by glorious, unspoilt countryside with walks from the doorstep along the River Lune. Kirkby Lonsdale is a smart historic market town. you will be delighted by the unique shops (don't miss the enchanted chocolate mine), cafes, restaurants, cobbled courtyards, Norman church and Georgian architecture. You'll see why the BBC decided that Kirkby Lonsdale was more authentic than Cornwall when making it's decision to film 'Jamaica Inn' in the town in 2014. Here you can enjoy fine dining or a chip supper. Thursday is Market Day. Wander from here to the famous ‘Ruskin’s View’, painted by a clutch of famous artists; Ruskin described this as one of the finest views in England. Oh, and don't miss the ever popular, if somewhat notorious, 14th Century, ‘Devil’s Bridge’ where tourists flock to take a plunge in the Lune. You can enjoy a burger or picnic in the park (parking is free of charge); look out for the 'Great stone of Fourstones', which is said to have burst from the Devil's purse strings as he ferried the masonry to build this bridge! Exploring this idyllic area, you will be spoiled for choice.
